Why Dual Language Schooling by Wayne P. Thomas and Virginia P. Collier -

Reviewed by Michael Peter Langevin, The Echo World, January 2018, p. 6

This is an important book for all parents, grandparents and anyone connected with education. It flies in the face of people who think all immigrants should only learn English, and puts to rest many old-fashioned ideas about dual language education. Dual language schooling means that students learn all subjects in two different languages. Both of my children grew up in dual language school programs, from kindergarten, until they finished high school. Now in their late twenties they are fluently bilingual. It has helped them in college, in finding and advancing in work, and even in how they think and reason.

The U.S. public educational system is not working for most children. We, as a nation, need to re-examine educational alternatives. Dual language schooling offers a chance for non-native speakers to learn at a healthy pace, and native English students to expand how they learn and think. If we really care about our children and the future, we cannot continue to underfund schools. The world is transforming fast. Unless we decide to bring in models like dual language schooling, our children and our country will be left behind.

Wayne P. Thomas and Virginia P. Collier are world renowned professors and researchers. In Why Dual Language Schooling they make a compelling case that dual language education makes students excel, not only in their studies, but in all levels of life. This is a most interesting read for anyone engaged in our school system, which should be everyone.
